TRADITIONAL BLACKSMITHS

The Blacksmithing tradition of working with "black" metals such as iron can be traced back through the centuries. The black comes from the metal being worked in the fire, where oxides form on the surface of the metal during heating. It is probably accurate to describe blacksmiths' work as an art form and a craft of great antiquity, having been practised in Great Britain for many centuries

The wrought iron or steel is heated until it glows red or orange to allow the metal to be worked and shaped to suit. The heating process is by means of a forge, which can be fuelled by coal, gas or propane.
